CELTIC FROST Frontman: 'If You See Me Looking Dark, Looking Aggressive — That's Real'
May 31, 2006To mark the release of "Monotheist", CELTIC FROST's first studio album in 14 years, Tom G. Fischer and Martin Ain of CELTIC FROST appeared on Sirius Hard Attack's "Bloody Roots" show Tuesday night (May 30) to discuss the new album, their thrash peers, and their classic pre-FROST band HELLHAMMER.
During the interview with host Ian Christe ("Sound of the Beast"),Fischer discussed his early band: "If you were stupid enough to say you wanted to become a musician [in Switzerland] everyone would laugh at you. Then there were a few heavy metal bands, and all of them tried to emulate AC/DC. So we came along, teenagers who couldn't even play music, and we were trying to be so much darker and intense then anything. They were just laughing at us, left and right. There was one distributor of heavy metal albums, the guy who took international albums and sold them in Switzerland. He formed a tiny label, and we sent them a demo. They wrote back telling us to go back to rehearsals, that we weren't even playing music. Nobody would help us with equipment or information or anything. They were ridiculing us in the worst way possible."
Later, Fischer blasts other metal comebacks: "If you just had a great party in the '80s and want to do the same album over and over again, that's not artistry. That's photocopying. I think that's pathetic. We believe in this imagery. We read Robert E. Howard. I lived that. I spent my entire youth escaping from my fucked-up parents, my fucked-up house, my fucked-up mother who left me alone six years old so she could smuggle diamonds and watches all over the fucking planet. I spent my youth in the forest with a fucking helmet on with horns and a sword, trying to be Conan, and do something different with my life. It sounds totally insane, but that was my world. I'm not coming back now with an album rehashing some old crap. I am brave, I can do something new. I'm not acting in a picture. If you see me looking dark, looking aggressive — that's real."
